Mentoring Works!

Mentoring is a positive relationship between an adult and a young person. It is designed to help the young person navigate the difficulties of life to reach their full potential. A mentor shares time, valuable life experience and lots of fun with a young person.

Young people of all ages need positive adult role models in their lives. The benefits of having a mentor, whether it's informally with someone you know or through a formal program, are great.

Research has shown that youth who are mentored are:
  • less likely to begin using illegal drugs

  • less likely to begin using alcohol

  • less likely to skip school

  • less likely to use violence in a confrontation
Mentoring has been shown to improve school performance and reduce illicit drug use, underage drinking and violence among young people. The key to mentoring's success, say the experts, is that it enhances a child's self-esteem and instills a sense of hope for the future.

The Anchorage Mentoring Alliance invites you to discover what mentoring is - and what it is not - why mentoring is important, the benefits of mentoring for adults as well as for youth, and the different types of mentoring opportunities that are available.
